Welcome to Madeline Island Retreat! We are experience makers who renovate unique properties to create special experiences for our family, friends and guests. Madeline Island is a very special place situated in Lake Superior, and has a rich history of Native American and European settlements. We recently purchased a Finnish-style log cabin on the island that was built in the '80s. For the first phase of the design update, we are looking to move into the 21st century by updating the main floor interiors to make them more modern & light while maintaining the coziness of the wood cabin. Our aesthetic is inspired by Scandinavian design (especially "Lagom", bringing the outside-in), and our native California boho chic (Native American textiles, rattan, Moroccan accents). It was tough to pick one of the Decor Style options i the questionnaire! We are modern and like simple yet luxurious interiors that elevate the room. But we also like Boho Chic and a mix of few found items (e.g., vintage decor) to make modern feel comfortable and grounded. I selected Beach from the menu since this is a lake house and we want it to feel light and integrated into the lake environment surrounding it

What do you currently dislike about the room?:

While we love the vaulted ceilings, the room feels darker and smaller than it could. We want it to feel brighter, lighter and spacious. There is a LOT of wood, and we want to balance that with furniture and accents/decor. There is a standing wood stove in the corner that we will keep, but it feels bulky because the windows are small. Lighting is an issue and we really need to add ceiling lighting (pendants from wood beams?) and floor/table lights.

What pieces of existing furniture, lighting, art or accessories do you want to keep in the design?:

The wood stove is the only furniture we will keep, unless there is something else you think we should keep (there is just a futon and simple coffee table plus a small entry table).

We will eventually paint the pine boards white (not the logs). Hopefully that will add light and dimension to the room. Similarly, I think the very large a-frame wall needs art work/decor that brightens it (white, color). We want the entry way to feel more welcoming. The stairs to the loft are both cool and too much at the same time. We are looking to change the railings out for something more modern & sleek, but may not have budget to do that right away. Note the living room flows into the kitchen (open concept) so I would love to have the color palette be something we can continue into the kitchen ( such as the cabinets) to make the larger space of living/kitchen feel consistent. We are aiming for a feeling of luxury and calm via neutrals and textures, with pops of color used wiself.

It feels very dark and could use lightening up! We are thinking to put two queen size beds here and perhaps some chair/nooks to create a hang out space (or spaces). There is a great view of lake Superior from the main windows, as well as some nice sky lights and a view of the cathedral ceiling of the main room. We would like to paint the non-log spaces white to add light and dimension.

This is one of two ground floor bedrooms of about the same size. We think both bedrooms should be very similar. The difference might be this room has a forest view and we were thinking of the rooms as seasons/ themes in terms of decor. This room would be more winter/Scandinavian with likely vintage skies as a wall accents and some sheep skin too!

For your main color, we chose to use white/off-white as it offers a fresh, clean, feel to the space. White and off-white colors are often a favorite for walls because they are light, neutral, and match most color schemes. They are known to make rooms feel more airy and spacious.

Use an eggshell finish paint which has a very light touch of shine (similar texture to an eggshell as implied by its name). This finish is very often used for walls and is more durable and easier to clean than matte finish
